The title for this episode should be: "Debbie does Oakland". Unchecked nepotism, incompetant political hacks who can't retire gracefully when they ought to (Bates in Berkeley is the same story), and an electorate paralysed by political correctness. It's kind of funny even if I have to live in this mess. Maybe the Edgerly story is the begining of the unraveling of the whole thing. More shoes are bound to drop. Debbie's lawyer said that she had a constitutional right to a hearing over her firing... where in the constitution? The FBI investigation may shine some light... maybe.

Comment on Why I Support Dellums’ Tax Increase Plan by Charlie

Even with your allowance for City Hall grabbing at least 50 percent of the new revenue to feather their own nests, the cost estimate is understated.

To see the true cost, step back and consider the political context. Passing this tax encourages the city council to keep proposing parcel tax after tax as they have done for years (Measure Y, Measure Q, Landscape and Lighting Assessment (LLAD) ...)

Indeed, the City outright stuffs the ballot box when it has the opportunity. This just happened with the huge LLAD tax increase. The voters defeated it, but City Hall created votes out of thin air and declared the increase was passed. See http://www.orpn.org/LLAD_B06.htm

Measure Y did not deliver one additional police officer for three years. Library cutbacks continue despite Measure Q. For the so-called LLAD, nearly 80 cents of every new dollar goes back to the general fund for anything except for parks, tree trimming, and street lights. The wording of the proposed Son of Measure Y turns out to be full of escape clauses.

Want all this to continue? Then vote for the measure.

Defeating Son of Measure Y is a vote of no confidence in City Hall. Stop the nickel and dime cheating.

Now she claims she will not reire until her name is cleared and she is rendered white as snow. With the volumous baggage she has collected over the past 5 years this could be a long, tedious, and expensive legal process. Meanwhile the City of Oakland once again takes it on the nose..............

Good point. Thanks. I've actually long thought the cleverest place to live is Vancouver, WA, which is just across the river from Portland. Then, you pay no income tax and you can shop in Portland with no sales tax. Pretty sweet deal!

Mandela Foods' website says it is waiting for permits. Where can the average citizen go to find these permit applications?

How long do the permits usually take to get approval?

Mandela Foods' website also states that it has the hardware; refrigerators, etc. Where is this stuff being store? Since Mandela Foods received $300K of public money, aren't these issues supposed to be transparent?

I want to know!

To maui - Yes, much of what Nevada did in the special session was not true cutting. But they did in fact authorize significant cuts. My point is not that their governance is perfect. Rather, it's at least "somewhat reasonable."

To Mike - I don't disagree about California's plusses, but consider that Seattle too has no income tax. And, there, you get much of the beauty you're describing. Also, my concern is not just the current state of affairs, but what we may face in 5 or 10 years. I see little opposition to tax increases in the future.

Oh, I don't know, I looked at the things they're cutting and nearly all of them appear to be either reserves or capital expenses. Doesn't sound like "cuts" to me, just deferrals. I guess that serves to balance the budget one year, but it looks like they still have a structural problem because those things will hit cashflow eventually unless they were cockeyed to begin with.

Totally agree with you that one-party rule is typically a disaster, at least on the finance side. I always get a chuckle at the market going up when the executive branch and legislative branch are at odds with each other - gridlocked government is good for business

On the other hand, all your gabbing about the "Nevada HQ" makes me think, do I want to be in California? I mean, I'm from Texas originally which has no income tax either. Easy answer though, yes, California is simply that much better than Nevada, and part of it is due to the extra spending I think. For instance, I *like* BART. And pretty bridges, etc. I don't think I get enough for my money but I'm willing to pay to get things, is all I'm saying.

But it's good to question those things.

Thanks for the information. It was great to see the alternative to what goes on here.

However, you are preaching to the choir.

I find that things are so one sided here that many people don't even understand that there is an alternative approach to "Tax and spend".

How can this blog be used to reach out to well intentioned people that might appreciate this point of view?
