Reverend Whitcomb, well said!!!! I think the author of this article is misinformed about them being the highest paid.
Also, good luck to the quality of candidates you would get with drastically cutting their pay. Why are you not more up in arms about the crooks that are running this city into the ground??? Oops I meant politicians. Also get ready to watch them pay out Debra Eddgersley just to keep their dirty secrets under the rug.

"We need a bankruptcy judge to come in not because we can’t numerically make ends meet but because our leaders will not accomplish that without some kind of adult supervision"

Wow.

The implicit assumption is that the bankruptcy judge will provide "adult supervision" [to the city government].

I'd just like to ask if the judges that deal with Oakland have demonstrated any success in making difficult decisions that have been successful?

Is the consent decree that has hobbled OPD and the $10.5 million payment to the plaintiffs when not one officer was convicted a sign of "adult supervision"?

I'd like to suggest that there is no "adult supervision" available in the bay area. This would be because the adults are out numbered.

That also explains why this blog is drowned out by the non-adults of the area.

What a great article about Oaktown's problems and once one recognizes the problems the solutions are more obvious.

Much of east Oak is a burnt out shell- condemnation by eminent domain raze now- revitalize later.

Give an incentive for retailers to locate here, make it easy to locate here instead of the onerous process that it is.

I have long been a reluctant proponent of BK because Oak has screwed up so badly promises it made but now cannot keep.

you are about half right. police compensation is as high as it is becaue Oakland had a difficult time hiring and keeping qualified officers. However times have changed and the police have to be willing to give up their upcoming 4% raise or the city certainly will be bankrupt.By the way the current police contract was mandated through arbitration because the city and police officers association could not reach agreement.

I always get a thrill when I observe the shock and amazement that result when the inevitable finally happens. Oakland (and many other public sector jurisdictions) is like a profligate child who was just told that Mommy and Daddy are broke. If it were Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland they'd paint up the barn and put on a show. I just got an email bemoaning the increase in library fines, parking meter fees, etc. Chump change. I'm sure the speed trap at the bottom of Redwood Road (at California) will be back in "business."

Here's another site worth reading. It helps a great deal in laying out the ridiculousness of the pension situation:

We can all keep an eye on how the Vallejo bankruptcy is going to see how this angle might play out. Also keep an eye on CA AB 155 which aims to hamper just such an approach.

Has anyone seen an example of any union agreeing to cut backs simply because it is the right thing to do?
